The photographer recognized he had captured something unique

In July 1988, an extraordinary moment took place backstage at Wembley Stadium in London—Princess Diana, the People’s Princess, met the King of Pop, Michael Jackson. This encounter, which happened before Jackson’s concert in aid of the Prince’s Trust charity, was their only in-person meeting but left a lasting impression on both.

Diana was an avid music fan, especially of 1980s pop. Among her favorite artists were Duran Duran and Michael Jackson, whose albums Thriller and Bad she reportedly played on repeat. It was through her love of Jackson’s music that fate brought them together on July 16, 1988.

At the concert, Diana attended with her then-husband, Prince Charles. Michael recalled feeling a mix of excitement and nervousness about meeting her. He was so respectful that he chose to remove the controversial song “Dirty Diana” from the setlist, worried it might offend the princess. However, Diana encouraged him to perform it, and he eventually did.

Michael spoke fondly of Diana, calling her “just wonderful,” and even gifted her two miniature tour jackets for her sons, Princes William and Harry. Diana’s enthusiasm was evident—she reportedly danced throughout the concert while Prince Charles remained seated.

Beyond this singular meeting, Michael and Diana shared a deeper connection. Michael once revealed that they often spoke late into the night, discussing their struggles with media scrutiny and their mutual love for their children. These private conversations painted a picture of two iconic figures united by shared challenges and compassion.

Despite rumors, it’s unclear whether Michael had direct access to Diana’s private number, but their friendship was marked by mutual respect and philanthropic commitment. Michael had generously donated to the Prince’s Trust and Great Ormond Street Hospital, causes dear to Diana.

Michael’s former bodyguard, Matt Fiddes, suggested that Michael’s feelings for Diana went beyond friendship, highlighting how much he valued someone who understood the pressures of fame and intrusion into private life.

When Diana tragically passed away in 1997, Michael was deeply affected, reportedly fainting upon hearing the news. He postponed a concert out of respect and later honored her memory with heartfelt words, calling her the “genuine princess of the people.”

Though Michael did not attend Diana’s funeral, he participated in a memorial service in Los Angeles, where he publicly expressed his love and respect for her. Throughout the years, he continued to speak warmly of their bond, emphasizing how they comforted each other through the harsh glare of the tabloids.

This rare photo of Princess Diana and Michael Jackson backstage at Wembley captures not just a meeting of two legends but a poignant reminder of their unique friendship—one defined by kindness, shared struggles, and mutual admiration.
