A Tragedy That Shattered a Campus

What began as an ordinary September evening for two Cal State Fullerton athletes turned into a nightmare the university will never forget. Nineteen-year-old midfielder Lauren Turner died on November 7, nearly six weeks after she and teammate Ashlyn Gwynn were struck by a box truck while riding electric scooters near campus.

Lauren never woke up.

Her family shared the heartbreaking update:
“Early this morning, our sweet Lauren fell asleep in the Lord… Our hearts are broken.”

She wasn’t just a starter — she was a light. Teammates remember her for her humor, her leadership, and the joy she carried into every room. She played in all 20 matches her freshman year and was becoming one of the Titans’ most reliable players.

On September 27, Lauren and Ashlyn were heading to a men’s soccer match when the truck hit them. Both suffered catastrophic injuries. Lauren was placed in a coma until her passing, while Ashlyn is still fighting through a long recovery that doctors say may take years.

The tragedy shook CSUF so deeply that head coach Demian Brown immediately implemented a new rule: mandatory helmets for all athletes riding electric scooters — a move now spreading across other programs as well.

Students, teammates, and the entire Titan community are grieving a girl whose laughter and spirit defined her team. Wristbands marked “LT5 – AG7” are worn across campus as a daily reminder of the two athletes forever changed that night.

Lauren Turner leaves behind a legacy far larger than the field she played on — a legacy of kindness, leadership, and a joy that everyone around her felt. Her Titan family will carry her with them always.
