WHY HOTELS ALWAYS HAVE THAT STRIP OF CLOTH ACROSS THE BED

If you’ve ever stayed in a hotel, you’ve probably noticed that long, decorative strip of fabric stretched neatly across the foot of the bed. Most people assume it’s just for style — a little extra color to make the room look fancy. But hotel insiders have revealed that its purpose is far more practical… and a little less glamorous than you might think.

That strip of fabric is called a bed runner, and while it adds a touch of elegance, it was originally designed for hygiene and protection. Think about it: many guests place their luggage, shoes, or even sit on the end of the bed while getting ready. The runner helps protect the clean white sheets from dirt, dust, and germs.

Housekeeping staff say it’s much easier (and cheaper) to wash or replace that small runner than to constantly replace full-sized bedding. It also serves another purpose — it helps hide minor wear and tear on the blanket or comforter, keeping the room looking crisp and new for every guest.

In luxury hotels, the runner can also act as a quick spot for room service trays or folded towels — without risking stains on the main bedspread.

So next time you see that strip at the end of your hotel bed, you’ll know: it’s not just decoration. It’s there to keep things clean, classy, and convenient — a small detail that quietly does a lot more work than it gets credit for.
