The Color of Your Stool Can Reveal Hidden Health Problems — Here’s What Each Shade Means

It might not be the most glamorous topic, but doctors agree — your stool color can tell you a lot about what’s going on inside your body. Paying attention to it could even help you spot serious health issues early.

1. Brown:
This is the normal color. It comes from bile produced by your liver and mixed with the food you digest. A healthy brown color means your digestive system is working just fine.

2. Green:
Green stool often means your food moved too quickly through the intestines — before bile could fully break down. It’s also common after eating lots of leafy greens or green food coloring.

3. Yellow or Greasy:
A yellow, oily stool that floats could be a sign your body isn’t absorbing fat properly. This might point to a problem with the pancreas, gallbladder, or liver.

4. Black or Very Dark:
Black stool can sometimes be caused by iron supplements — but it can also indicate internal bleeding in the upper digestive tract. If it persists, you should get it checked immediately.

5. Red:
Bright red stool could mean bleeding in the lower digestive tract or hemorrhoids. But sometimes, it’s just from eating foods like beets or red-dyed snacks — so look carefully before panicking.

6. Pale, Gray, or Clay-Colored:
This can mean your liver isn’t producing enough bile — possibly a sign of gallstones or liver problems.

Your stool might not be something you want to talk about, but it’s one of the clearest signs your body gives when something isn’t right. Checking the color just might save your life.
