I was set to interview a new employee.
He walked in—well-dressed, confident, with a resume that glowed.

His name was Jayden Morales.

Something about him felt familiar. Not his face, but his presence—his eyes held a kind of gratitude that didn’t make sense. Until he handed me his cover letter.

At the bottom, a handwritten note:
“My mother always told me: ‘One day, thank the lawyer who gave me a second chance.’ I believe that was you.”

I froze.

“Your mom…” I said slowly. “Was she caught shoplifting… a pen?”

He smiled. “A blue pen. For my birthday.”

My throat tightened.

He said, “That moment changed her life. She got help. Went back to school. Raised me to believe in second chances—and in justice. I became a lawyer because of you.”

I didn’t say much. I just stood, reached out my hand, and said,
“Welcome to the team, Jayden.”

He smiled again. “Thank you… for everything.”

Sometimes, the smallest act of mercy can echo across decades.
You never know who that one moment of compassion will grow into.

Choose kindness. It lasts longer than you think.
