Purple porch light

After she left, I sat there puzzled. What did a purple porch light mean? I thought I was just adding a splash of color to my house—something fun, maybe a little whimsical. But clearly, to her, it meant something deeper.

Later that evening, curiosity got the best of me, so I did some searching online. That’s when I found out: a purple porch light is often used to raise awareness about domestic violence. It’s a silent but powerful message of support—for survivors, for those still struggling, and to honor those who didn’t make it out.

I was stunned.

What started as a random design choice turned into something that unknowingly connected me to a community of strength and resilience. It made me think—how many others in my neighborhood are telling silent stories through the colors of their porch lights?

Now, every time I turn on that light, it means something more. And even though it began as an accident, I’ve decided to keep it purple. Not just because of what it represents, but because I now understand the impact a small light can have in the dark.
