The foreman looks him up and down, clearly doubtful, then says, \u201cI might have something for you\u2026 but first you need to pass a little math test.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The old man shrugs. \u201cAlright.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The foreman smiles and says, \u201cFirst question. Without using numbers, represent the number nine.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWithout numbers?\u201d the old man repeats. \u201cThat\u2019s easy.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He bends down and draws&nbsp;<strong>three trees<\/strong>&nbsp;in the dirt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The foreman squints. \u201cWhat is that supposed to be?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The old man looks at him like he\u2019s offended. \u201cYou don\u2019t have a brain? Tree plus tree plus tree makes nine.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The foreman pauses\u2026 then nods. \u201cFair enough.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He clears his throat. \u201cSecond question. Same rules \u2014 but this time, represent the number ninety-nine.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The old man stares into space for a long moment.
