Maxine Waters declined to endorse age limits for elected officials during a Capitol Hill exchange Thursday, insisting voters \u2014 not arbitrary age thresholds \u2014 should decide who remains in office.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The 87-year-old California Democrat was approached by TMZ producer Jacob Wasserman following a Working Families press conference and asked whether younger Americans have a point when they argue some leaders are simply too old to remain in power.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Waters made it clear that she does not believe that age alone should determine whether someone is fit for office.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhat do they do? What can you document? What can you give them credit for? What can you criticize them for? If you do what it takes to evaluate, then you can decide,\u201d Waters said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When Wasserman suggested voters should focus on what politicians actually accomplish rather than their age, Waters agreed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cPerformance and effectiveness,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The conversation then shifted toward President Donald Trump after Wasserman asked whether an 80-year-old commander in chief might be too old, referencing prior public concerns over former President Joe Biden\u2019s age.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Waters declined to directly engage on Trump\u2019s age and instead launched into criticism of the president\u2019s leadership.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe president of the United States is destroying our democracy,\u201d Waters said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cHe\u2019s made unkept promises. He is enriching himself and his family with cryptocurrency. They\u2019re not really about the past,\u201d Rahman added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Waters says her experience and the energy she brings to the job every day are why she\u2019s running for re-election.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe Democratic Party is working as it normally does,\u201d Waters said. \u201cThey will choose their candidates based on the relationships that they have, the work that they have done, the interests that they have shown \u2013 not about age.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Waters appeared at an anti-ICE protest in downtown Los Angeles in February, chanting \u201cICE out of L.A.\u201d hours before the demonstration descended into violence and police made multiple arrests.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhat I see here at the detention center are people exercising their constitutional rights,\u201d Waters said while standing in front of officers wearing riot gear, Fox News&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.yahoo.com\/news\/articles\/lapd-arrests-violent-agitators-protests-063731661.html?guccounter=1&amp;guce_referrer=aHR0cHM6Ly93d3cuZ29vZ2xlLmNvbS8&amp;guce_referrer_sig=AQAAAHd00KlBZ_YTqsWxkPAqSFdaPs6I2lJLfImW5JV_rIOZGmInEBTYVaHoy6icV4AaPOYHoAC3JdO1V2TrABheyt3CWxEW6ltuvKzeaBMJFnbTOPf2uToFJrhAlIQ8RlsosYndcK5-MXxihaw7ESBIOf30x_vBL3ex0a_QiKBsw_xv\">reported<\/a>. \u201cAnd, of course, they\u2019re now trying to tear gas everybody. It\u2019s in the air, but people are not moving.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Later on Friday, Los Angeles police arrested multiple violent agitators after issuing dispersal orders as protests erupted near a federal detention center.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Thousands of protesters gathered outside City Hall Friday afternoon before many marched to the detention facility, where a group of agitators pushed a large construction dumpster and blocked the entrance to the building\u2019s loading dock, according to police.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The LAPD shared video of the unrest on social media and said officers deployed pepper balls and tear gas to disperse the crowd.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"80\" height=\"80\" src=\"https:\/\/realtimebuzz.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/signal-2026-01-09-024205-1.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-7478\"\/><\/figure>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Rep.
